Worked examples
Round 4,623 to the nearest hundred.
- 4,600
- 4,700
- 4,620
- 5,000
Answer: 4,600. 4,623 has 23 ones — less than 50 — so we round DOWN to 4,600.
Order from SMALLEST to largest: 4,617; 4,167; 4,716; 4,671.
- 4,167 < 4,617 < 4,671 < 4,716
- 4,716 < 4,671 < 4,617 < 4,167
- 4,617 < 4,167 < 4,716 < 4,671
- 4,167 < 4,671 < 4,617 < 4,716
Answer: 4,167 < 4,617 < 4,671 < 4,716. Compare column by column. Smallest = 4,167; largest = 4,716.
Why does multiplying a number by 100 move every digit TWO columns to the left?
- Because 100 = 10 × 10, and each × 10 moves digits one column left. Two × 10 = two columns.
- Because we add two zeros.
- Because of place value.
- Because the answer is bigger.
Answer: Because 100 = 10 × 10, and each × 10 moves digits one column left. Two × 10 = two columns.. × 100 = × 10 × 10 → digits move 2 columns left.
