Mia has 24 stickers. She gives 7 to her brother. How many does she have left?

Answer: 17. 24 − 7 = 17.
A teacher has marked this answer wrong. The problem said: "Lia had 24 sweets, ate 1/4, then gave away 6. How many are left?" The pupil wrote 18. What's missing?
- The pupil forgot to subtract the 6 sweets given away.
- The pupil divided by the wrong fraction.
- The pupil multiplied instead of subtracted.
- The answer is correct.
Answer: The pupil forgot to subtract the 6 sweets given away.. 1/4 of 24 = 6 eaten, so 18 left after eating. Then 18 − 6 (given away) = 12. The pupil stopped after step 1.
A coach travels at 50 km/h for 2 hours, then at 40 km/h for 1 hour. What is the total distance?
- 100 km
- 180 km
- 270 km
- 140 km
Answer: 140 km. Leg 1: 50 × 2 = 100 km. Leg 2: 40 × 1 = 40 km. Total: 100 + 40 = 140 km.
